PETALING JAYA: Track cyclist Azizulhasni Awang paid a heavy price for the successful defence of the World Cup overall title in keirin in Manchester as he now has to forgo participation in the upcoming World Championships in Apeldoorn from March 23-27.
Team manager Dauk Naim Mohamad said after discussion with coach John Beasley, it was better for Azizul to skip the world meet in Holland as a precautionary measure after his left calf muscle was pierced by a nine-inch long splinter in the keirin final in the last leg of the World Cup in Manchester on Saturday.
Azizul, who still managed to cross the finish line to win a bronze medal before collapsing, underwent an operation to remove the splinter at the Manchester Royal Infirmary yesterday afternoon.

Tak banyak yang ku nak perkatakan cuma kalau kebanyakan atlit kita punya "force" macam ni, dah lama sukan kita maju dan setanding dengan ahli sukan benua lain.
"He'll miss next month World Championships, but nevermine, world is in his hand in next few years.."
Semoga Azizulhasni cepat sembuh dan "you make us proud..."
May The Force Be With You...
